Earthwatch is a Not For Profit Organisation whose mission is to engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment.  

For more than forty years Earthwatch volunteers and donors have helped to make significant, positive changes around the world for a sustainable future. We do this in two key ways: matching volunteers to over 150 scientific research expeditions around the planet, and in so doing, funding the scientific research.

By engaging everyday people directly in scientific processes, we’ve been delivering outcomes in four key sustainability areas: oceans, cultural heritage, ecosystem services and climate change.

Earthwatch’s independently audited Research Fund guarantees that 100% of your donations go directly to research projects. So whether you’re interested in the hands-on experience of being a research project volunteer or simply want to provide financial support for valuable scientific research, you can help Earthwatch make a difference to ensure a sustainable future.

Marine debris is one of the greatest threats Australia faces. As a nation we are consuming 1.4 million tonnes of plastic a year. Only 14% of this is recycled and the rest can take 500 years or more to decompose in the ocean.

Despite seeing and knowing that marine debris exists, the vast majority of us are still unaware of just how serious the problem is for our environment.
