Kate for 40K Home

Close at  Saturday, 2 January 2010

I am dusting off the joggers and pounding the pavement in the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival, running 9kms.

At the same time I am aiming to raise money for charity and I would welcome any contribution, great or small, that you could make!

(Do Not Use - OLD) The 40K Home Foundation
40K takes on cost-effective poverty-reducing education projects that empower people to realise their right to social and economic development.

Our maiden project was the building of a bridging school to benefit the families of exploited quarry workers in the rural slums around Bangalore. With their families unable to afford to send them to school, the children will now have access to crucial stimulation and education during their key developmental years. The bridging school will therefore provide remedial education for up to 150 children at a time, to bring them up to speed before they are placed into the local mainstream schooling. This otherwise unavailable access to education will make a massive difference to these children’s lives and afford them the opportunities, which were not available to their parents, to work their way out of poverty.

We now want to have a greater impact by providing educational opportunities to over 2,000 children per year. This will involve partnerships with three local  and highly experienced non-profit organisations in India to provide access to libraries, reading programs, after school programs and vital life skills programs.

As part of its commitment to engage with and contribute to the world outside the office, the corporate group at Freehills in Sydney has announced an initiative in 2009 to raise $45,000 for 40k Home (www.40khome.org).

40K Home is a non-profit organisation that takes on innovative solutions to poverty-related problems in the developing world, and provides a bridge between Australia and its projects by making those projects adventurous, interactive and scientific. The inaugural project is a first-of-its-kind eco-shelter and community learning centre for 150 severely underprivileged kids outside Bangalore, India. After 3 years of planning, the construction phase kicked off in February 2009 and with your support, can be finished by May next year. Check out the 40K website for the latest pictures and update.

As a major part of the fund-raising, a team of runners from Freehills has entered into the Sydney Running Festival in September and hopes to raise a total of $30,000 by running, walking (and, in some cases, crawling) the marathon, half-marathon and the bridge run.

Please lend your support to 40K Home and the runners by sponsoring the Freehills team, or any of the individual runners. Any donation, however small, would be very greatly appreciated and will help us achieve our target of $30,000!
