Dementia is a general term for more than 70 conditions causing progressive deterioration in thinking, memory and everyday abilities. While it is more common as people age, dementia is not a normal part of ageing. Deaths from dementia including Alzheimer's disease have more than doubled in the last decade and dementia is now the 3rd highest cause of death in Australia.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia - up to 70% of people with dementia have Alzheimer's disease.
Recent studies have revealed that 1,300 new cases of dementia are diagnosed each week and 241,000 Australians currently have a diagnosis of dementia. That number is projected to reach 605,000 in 2030 and even further to an astounding 1,130,000 or more by 2050. Between 2000 and 2050 the number of people living with dementia in Australia is expected to increase by 327%, while the total population increases be less than 40%. In Australia, 6 people every hour are diagnosed with dementia and 1 in 3 Australians with Dementia live in NSW. In New South Wales almost 88,000 people have a diagnosis of Dementia.
"Within 20 years dementia will become the number one killer of Australians"
