The Coeliac Research Fund (CRF) was founded to change the lives of those with coeliac disease, both diagnosed and undiagnosed. It is now thought that well over 1 in 100 people have coeliac disease, that is, 223,000 Australians,of which 75% are undiagnosed - coeliac disease is truly a 'hidden epidemic' of our time.
Coeliac disease is the most common hereditary auto-immune condition and is twice as common as type 1 diabetes. It is caused by an immune response to gluten which is found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. The only management of the condition at the moment is a life-long gluten free diet.
The CRF is committed to finding a cure for coeliac disease and have three focuses - AWARENESS – DIAGNOSIS – RESEARCH. We are ensuring that research into coeliac disease is resourced by funding innovative projects focused on patient outcomes. Awareness and improved diagnosis is also high on our agenda, the earlier coeliac disease is detected the better.
The CRF also liaise closely with patient advocacy and health professional groups, disseminating best evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for coeliac disease through its Clinical Advisory Committee. This Committee comprises leading gastroenterologists, paediatricians, researchers, dietitians and pharmacologists.
Of concern is that the average age of diagnosis in Australia is 40, yet untreated, coeliac disease can lead to life-threatening conditions such as
- chronic anaemia
- liver disease
- early onset osteoporosis
- and some cancers
