In just over a weeks time, along with about 30 other cyclists, I will be embarking on a 300km ride across part of New Zealand's country side to help raise money for children in need. I'm aiming to raise $1250 and as a group we're aiming for $100,000+. All the money we raise will go to help children who have very little compared to what we have. For example one project we are supporting is to help improve the nutrition of children under 5 in the Gorontalo district in Indonesia. Their infant mortality is 10x the Australian rate, mostly from preventable causes, and their malnutrition figures are more than double the Indonesian national average. A lack of skills and knowledge, thanks in part to an underfunded and underutilised community health service has led to a generation of parents under equiped to protect their children. Through the work that ADRA international is doing in this district 61 health centres will be strengthened and community health workers will be trained to provide mothers with targeted, practical health courses that will equip them to better care for their childen.
